The Pits at Turkey Point
July 2 was a big day for the Sun City Carolina Lakes Horseshoe Club. For those of you who walk their dogs on Saturday mornings, or take a stroll with friends or loved ones, or play pickle ball at the Pavilion courts, you may have noticed that the horseshoe pits have gone silent. This is not due to a lack of interest – but rather a move to a new venue. Those hardy souls of the Horseshoe club, and hardy souls they are, playing in the heat, the cold, and wet weather conditions, moved their “skills” to Turkey Pt., with the first competition taking place on the second of July.
There is a regular group of guys, and sometimes gals, that show up throughout the year with the only concession to the weather being to change the starting time. While the games are always spirited, and the competition usually keen, the real draw is the camaraderie. Relegated to just two courts for the past few years, the faithful nevertheless showed up every Saturday, even though they knew that with limited courts, they would have to wait their turn but then again, that was part of the fun – needling, cajoling, and supporting the other players.
When the opportunity came to build new courts at Turkey Pt., the Club jumped at the chance. After a series of setbacks, a plan was set in place to build four new courts, complete with a drainage system. The effort was long and arduous but the same dedication that was shown by the players every Saturday morning, surfaced again as volunteers willingly gave up their time and almost certainly suffered many a sore muscle as a result.
Now comfortably settled into their new ”home” for nearly two months the SCCL Horseshoe Club would like to extend an invitation to Sun City residents to join them every Saturday morning at 9am for a spirited game of horseshoes.
